Preventive Care Among the Medicare Population
The statistics and estimates are based on www.Neilson.com/Insights (accessed April 18, 2024) and the 2020 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) Preventive Care Public Use File (PUF) and represent the beneficiaries who were enrolled in Medicare in 2020 and completed an interview in Winter 2021 or Summer 2021(9/2023).
Provider Supply and Demand
- 80 million Baby Boomers born between 1946 –1964. There will be 80 million Medicare members by 2030.
- In 2020, only 45% of Medicare members got their Annual Wellness Visits (less for minorities and those < 65 yrs)
- In Texas, there are 6,373 Family Practice physicians with a demand for 9,668. That’s a 34% shortfall that is expected to grow to 35% by 2036.
- When it comes to Geriatric physicians, the shortfall is 74% and expected to grow to 80% by 2036.
- As the Medicare population grows, the number of available providers will decrease. This decrease will mean a greater healthcare burden on each provider, especially Family Practice providers.
The burden on PCPs will likely increase as the number of Baby Boomers on Medicare and in need of health services increases.
